An
"autoresponder" is a web-based tool (in most cases)
that does the following:
1.
It manages and categorizes newsletter/announcement list subscriptions
automatically (opting in, opting out, creating and managing
list categories, etc.). It also has an easy-to-use tool that
automatically creates web forms, pop-ups and dynamic "hover
pops" that allow your visitors to sign up for your newsletter,
your free ebook, a free report or something similar.

It gives you the ability to easily broadcast a message to your
subscribers - and the one we use averages about a 97% delivery
rate!
(Our
old "desktop" mailing program had about a 60% delivery
rate on a good day, with no open-rate or click-through
tracking. We also had to manage opt-ins and unsubscribe requests
manually. It was horrible...)
3.
This is truly awesome - an autoresponder will actually let you
see how many people open your emails, and it will also track
the clicks (response) of each link within the message. Plus,
once your list reaches over 100 subscribers, you can actually
split-test a broadcast by sending out two different versions
of the same message to each half of your subscriber base. This
finally makes it possible for you see exactly what headline
works best to get your emails opened, as well as what sort of
offer will convert the best.
So
far, I've basically described the ultimate mailing program -
which a good autoresponder will be - but what truly sets them
apart is the following feature...

of all, an autoresponder allows you to automatically follow-up
and build rapport with your subscribers, leads, sales prospects
and buyers. This is an incredibly powerful feature because you
can literally write up a series of messages (eg. a "mini-course"),
set the message intervals (days in between mailings), and let
the system boost your sales on autopilot.
In
some cases, using autoresponders to follow-up with potential
buyers has increased a conversion rate from something like 3%
(traffic vs. buyers) to around 30%.
That
means that for every 100 visitors, instead of only making 3
sales, there have been cases where that figure has turned into
30 sales per 100 visitors - simply by following up with them
automatically.
To

will also automatically transfer a "lead" from the
"prospect" list to the "buyer" list once
they purchase a product.
